In any other situation, Amy would be planning her exit strategy. But being around Lena was incredible. She made Amy feel like she could be anything, do anything, while at the same time it was okay to be exactly who she was. Amy had never felt like that with anyone. She pulled into Lena’s driveway. “I know you said this morning that your sister is due back soon, but when is she actually coming home?”

“Chloe is bringing her back tomorrow. She wanted to stay up in Tahoe.” She opened the car door and started up to the porch. “I assume because she wanted to spend more time with Ben, Chloe’s little brother.”

Amy was relieved for two reasons. One, Laura was interested in someone she assumed was closer to her age, seeing as Lena didn’t seem to have a real issue with it. Two, because it would mean she would stay clear of Peter Reynolds, which was good for her as well. She continued to follow Lena up to the house. “How do you feel about that? Ben and Laura?”

Lena opened the door and walked in. “I’m not sure anything will come of it. But he’s a much better decision than that scumbag you keep an eye on.” Lena seemed to slow, probably replaying what she had just said.

“It’s okay. What he did was terrible. I don’t blame you for feeling like that about him.”

They went inside and Lena started turning on lights. “How can you do it? Protect him the way you do.”

Amy hung her jacket over the chair. She crossed her arms and thought about her answer. She had been asked the same question dozens of times. This time her answer had a different significance. It would shape what Lena thought of her, and that mattered deeply. “I would be lying if I said it was always easy. It’s not. Some of the things these people do are shameful. I do my best to compartmentalize, keep myself separated from it. Not all public relations work is getting people out of trouble. But that’s where the money is, and that’s where my firm focuses.”

Lena was listening, but Amy could tell her answer wasn’t the one she was hoping for.

“Have you ever considered working somewhere else?”

“Honestly, I’ve always been so focused on making partner I’ve never considered leaving. This situation with Peter Reynolds, it’s not what I typically spend my day doing. What happened with your sister and those other girls was ridiculous. I hope you know I don’t condone what he was doing.”

Lena nodded. “I know. I mean, I hope you wouldn’t. It’s just hard for me to imagine you being on his side.”

“I’m not on his side. I’m just doing my job.”

“What exactly is your job? I mean, you say you don’t spend your days doing this type of thing, so what do you spend your days doing?”

Amy thought about it before she answered. She had given a scripted answer dozens of times before, to her parents, to friends, to women.
